There’s nothing quite like a big bowl of noodles to warm you up on a chilly day — except, perhaps, a litter of heartwarming little noodles who were recently rescued from a freezing and downright dangerous situation.

“Fellow rescue advocates in the area were concerned [about] where these puppies may end up,” said Shipley, “and I knew getting them into a rescue would be their best hope. I immediately started reaching out to people in the area, and we convinced the ‘owner’ to surrender them to a rescue and not give them away to internet strangers.”

At that point, the puppies were transported to a foster in upstate North Carolina. The pups were approximately 5-6 weeks old (too young to be separated from their mom) and suffering from parasites and malnutrition. After three weeks in foster care, Saving Grace decided they were finally healthy enough to travel up to Maryland.

Shipley says each of the pups has its own, individual personality — and its own ‘pasta’ name: Penne, Linguine, Rigatoni, Ravioli, Macaroni, Spaghetti, Lasagna, Fettuccini, Tortellini, Ziti and Cannelloni. The rescue started calling the litter“the pasta puppies.”

“We came up with the pasta theme simply because when I agreed to take them in, we had no idea how many females or males there were,” Shipley tells PEOPLE. “We were looking for eleven gender neutral names.”
After receiving countless inquiries and over 50 applications the first week, the shelter found forever homes for all the puppies this past weekend.

“Our volunteers put their heart and soul into saving dogs from situations such as this, in addition to the high kill facilities we’d work with in the south,” says Shipley. “Yes, even puppies are euthanized regularly. Sadly, their [story] is one of many, and I can only hope that theirs helps bring awareness to the importance of spay, neuter and adoption.”
