We ’re inhabit in a freaking favorable eld of superhero tv set testify right now , especially if you reckon things like Netflix . But even with such a wealth of amazing stuff remove our screens late , Agents of SHIELD feel pretty unique . And last Nox ’s non - arrest - foolishness episode was the substantiation .
Spoilers in front …
Agents of SHIELD has always had its ups and downs — but it ’s also a show that has a pretty solid track record of paying off , if you give it enough metre . For those of us who were marvel if the stuff about the ATCU , that government delegacy congeal up to deal with all the freshly - empowered Inhumans , would prove worthwhile — we get a decent answer with last night ’s “ Closure . ”

And there was a lot of poppycock in “ Closure ” that only packs its full impact if you ’ve been watching Agents of SHIELD since daylight one , because it ’s an episode that really rewards an in - deepness noesis of that freaking psycho asshole , Grant Ward .
In a nutshell , here ’s what happens in “ Closure . ” Grant Ward goes after Coulson , shooting Coulson ’s fellow worker / love - involvement Roz in the middle of a too - good - to - last romantic moment . Coulson , in issue , goes off the inscrutable end , so determined to eliminate Ward that he ’s unforced to go “ off books ” with some half-baked stunts . Meanwhile , Ward and his Modern bestie , Gideon Malick , are set their actual plan into action — with some reluctance on Ward ’s part . They lure Fitz and Simmons into a trap , question them , and finally convince Fitz to help them go to the distant planet where Simmons was trapped , so they can rescue the ancient Inhuman lusus naturae that Simmons glimpse there . ( The one that tend to drive the great unwashed harebrained . ) Fitz , Ward , and some Hydra goons travel through a vena portae to the alien earth — but they bring along a stowaway : Coulson .
“ Closure ” starts and ends with some pretty lurid events and over - the - top activity — but its linchpin is the stuff in the heart , where we delve into just what makes Grant Ward the person he is . And we ’re pull to ask just how much like Ward Coulson is uncoerced to become , for get retaliation for Roz ’s decease .

Coulson is being totally reactive , but he still recreate it passably overbold . He gather all of his original team from season one , and interrogate them about Ward , trying to pinpoint anything they may remember about their ex - mate that could help . It ’s really passing fascinating to see all those relationship from a couple year ago , filtered through what we know about Ward now . And the interesting bit come when Daisy sort of Lashkar-e-Toiba slip that she does really infer Ward , and even sympathize with him a little morsel . They both had similar “ mess up - up ” childhoods , and that became a filter through which they see everything else . They got used to obliterate parts of themselves , and lying so as to survive . Daisy understands Ward — but she will never forgive him .
“ The reason Ward kill is n’t because he feel nothing , ” says Daisy . “ It ’s because he feels too much . ”
This enables Coulson to find Ward ’s impuissance and exploit it — Ward ’s pal , Thomas , whom he trapped down a well when they were kids at the abettal of their psycho old brother Christian . All of those flashback to the kid down the well , from time of year one , suddenly take on a Modern import when we see Thomas and see just how scarred he still is by Grant ’s opprobrious demeanour . ( Plus their malign parents , and Christian . )

So we cease up with a position where Ward and Coulson are both pushing each other ’s buttons as hard as they can , and they ’re both being drive over the edge by their emotions . The only person who ’s even trying to be the voice of reason is Bobbi , who ’s used to this kind of shit with her on - again , off - again bed pastime Lance .
And on Grant ’s side , the part of cause is weirdly Gideon Malick , who tells Grant that closure is bullshit . law of closure is not for closers . “ What I trust in is moving forward . ” rather of obsessing over wrongs from his yesteryear and trying to balance the scales and all that curative hooey , Malick just want to bring that nightmare puppet from the other major planet back to Earth , which is allegedly Hydra ’s founding mission , from hundreds of days ago .
Malick wins that arguing , by convince Ward that he can be a leader in Hydra , instead of obsessively chasing the Road Runner of Coulson and SHIELD . And once he ’s found the monster and brought it back to Earth , “ we can do whatever the Inferno we want . ” Ward sort of screw he ’s being manipulated , but he still go along with it .

Meanwhile , Coulson is being led by his emotions , and on a mad rampage , after the fridging of Rosalind . But he does make one good call — he makes Mack the acting theatre director of SHIELD while Coulson is off doing thing the SHIELD director should n’t be affect in , like kidnapping Ward ’s brother .
And one of the big thing in the sequence is getting to view Mack step up and slowly start making the tough calls . Including recruit two Inhumans , Joey and Lincoln , to the SHIELD squad aggress the deftness where Ward and Malick are holding Fitz and Simmons . Mack really makes a really good loss leader — probably better than Coulson , because he shares his intel with others and taste to take care of his people . ( Coulson ’s the one who send Fitz and Simmons into that trap , without enough musical accompaniment . )
Speaking of which , Fitz and Simmons both wind up face - to - face with Ward , right after doing all that someone - searching about him to Coulson . And Ward is in full - on sociopath mode , having his telekinetic friend anguish Simmons while he rig Fitz . The end result is that Fitz folds , agreeing to go to the other satellite as their guide . ( But Fitz also sort of anticipate Simmons that he ’ll rescue Will , the plucky astronaut that Simmons was involved with , but he wo n’t bestow back the terrific brute that drives people mad . Good luck , Fitz ! )

So as the instalment ends , Coulson has parachuted into the vena portae just as it ’s closing , and he does not have a in particular voiced landing place on the foreign planet . He seems out stale , or perchance injured . Meanwhile , Ward , Fitz and the Hydra oaf are already on their way .
This was a standout instalment — not just because it kept you guessing about what was going to bump next , but also because characters we ’ve had a few years to empower in were making some seriously scary choice . Coulson , in particular , seems like the loss of Rosalind , who was his equal and someone he could actually confide in , is twist him into a monster . It ’s a fascinating paradox that the one somebody who offers useful advice on how to avoid letting the yesteryear turn you into an abomination is Malick , who ’s the most terrible character of all .
