On Wednesday , we published an article about animal eudaimonia in enquiry experimentation . It was biased , factually incorrect , and should not have appeared on io9 in that conformation . As io9 ’s editor - in - chief , I ’m the one who get laid up , and I ’m deplorable . Here ’s how this mess happened , and what we ’re doing about it .

I attribute this clause to George Dvorsky , in part because he has a lot of experience advocating for animal right . We sometimes give up writer to publish their work without editing on io9 . And it was the 24-hour interval before a holiday , so I permit the article to go up with short oversight . That was where I went wrong . Some stories should fall under rigorous editorial scrutiny , and fauna welfare in the laboratory is an rabble-rousing and complicated issue . I should have spent a lot of time editing the article to check that we had our fact square . But I did n’t .
I am deep sorry that I allowed the clause to be release as it was . It was a major fault — and I take responsibility for it as George ’s editor .
As horrendous as this position was , this is how societal media journalism is supposed to act upon in its idealistic form . I screwed up as an editor , and you caught it — within bit . Of naturally this fault should never have encounter , but I ’m grateful that you call io9 on it and did more than just secernate us we were amiss . Several scientists and philosophers spent time on their vacation to tattle to George , and to write long , silver-tongued explanation of their perspectives in email . Thanks to your help , and our edits , the clause as it stands does represent many sides of the issue . And PETA is credit as the source of opinions , rather than facts .
Again , I want to emphasize that you guys merit an excuse for our fault . Put merely : I have intercourse up . But if I had to break ( and no doubt I will again ) , I ’m thankful to go bad in this community , which is full of smart , informed readers who are here to educate , react meaningfully , and affiance with the topics we encompass . Even though it go down on to shaft up , I could n’t ask for a better chemical group to tell me where I went wrong .
