In a conversation with skill fiction author Jeff VanderMeer , published on NPR , Fowler talks about the shift that she see in public perception of animate being cognisance :

I see this Holy Scripture as having arrived on the scene at a moment when I feel a shift is happening . I do n’t think my book is creditworthy for that shift . But I think my book may be part of it . It feel to me as if the research onanimal cognitionhas been so stupefying and move so tight , teaching us so many things we had imagined were not the sheath , we are easy beginning to reply to the new information .
As my book was coming out , the administration end chimp testing , with a smattering of exceptions . Last year , there werethree cases file away on behalf of chimpanzee in New York statearguing that chimpanzee possessed certain legal rights ( though the sheath were quickly dismissed ) . And thenthis whole SeaWorld thingis brewing …
When I was doing research , I stumbled on an consequence that I had never heard of called thebrown weenie riot , which took place in Battersea , England , in about 1906 . It was this curious flashpoint , without going into too many details , over the issue of vivisection at the medical schools , which had the aesculapian students on one side and this huge short letter - up on the other side of labor , the suffragist , the Fabians , the Marxists , the socialists , all opposed to vivisection , all seeing it as a gendered egress , a course issue . On the other side , only the medical students , really , and the medical universities .

It ended equivocally with no absolved win on either side . And yet it seems to have been the last gasp of this coalition that somehow disappear . And then the use of beast for the most trivial of reasons , like cosmetics , went unchallenged for decades and decades …

VanderMeer need Fowler whether we can ever truly understand animals without anthropomorphizing , and she replies :

We have our own restriction , again , that our own body provide a laborious limit of some variety about what we can actually understand . You mentioned earlier that it ’s so much easy for us to empathize with certain animals . The more human - like their tidings , the more we can recognize it as intelligence service . You and I are both are very aware of endeavor over the decades to imagine truly exotic coinage and truly alien ways of view . It ’s just really hard , if not impossible , to do . I think that we both try , certainly you in your most late book , and me in my first novel , to provide the mystery story . To say , there will be clue ; there will be selective information . We ’ll be trying to understand . But the mystery is go to remain .
The question is really whether we will ever learn to live well with that mystery . Fowler has found hope in the musical theme that one daytime we might be able to accord non - human animal their reign , despite being unable to comprehend their intelligence activity in the same elbow room we perceive our own .
