It might look like a grotesque set of headphones , but theWHILLis actually an electrical drivetrain contrive to clamp onto manually powered wheelchair , temporarily give them a powered boost when long distances have to be travel .
The image — which was late march at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show — features a orotund hub on either side that confiscate to the inside rims of the wheelchair ’s wheels . Each hub houses a 24 V electric motor power by a rechargeable lithium - ion battery that ’s good for about 19 mi before command a two hour kick .
