Facial recognition engineering science has beencreepingintoAmerican airportsfor a few years , but now the Department of Homeland Security ( DHS ) is trying to give its agent the ability to perform compulsory look CAT scan on all U.S. citizen traveling into and out of the country .

DHS has been test facial recognition organisation at U.S. airportssince 2016 . That engineering used photos deal of people at TSA checkpoints for facial confirmation for the individuality of international travelers . Earlier this year , BuzzFeedobtained document that disclose DHS was contrive to implement that system at the country ’s top 20 airports by 2021 . But thecurrent rulesstate that U.S. citizens are exempt from such biometric check .

Now it seems that DHS does n’t require U.S. citizens to get a pass . Asthe Identity Projectreports , the DHS has proposedin a recent filingthat it will spread out its current facial recognition policy “ to provide that all travelers , including US citizens , may be required to be photographed upon entry and/or passing ” from the res publica .

The plotted expanding upon of this biometric system policy has been condemn by the American Civil Liberties Union . “ Time and again , the governmenttoldthe public and members of Congress that U.S. citizen would not be required to accede to this intrusive surveillance technology as a condition of traveling , ” ACLU senior policy analyst Jay Stanley sound out in a command shared with Gizmodo . “ This raw card suggests that the government is reneging on what was already an deficient hope . ”

Stanley tot that U.S. citizen have a constitutional right hand to journey and they should n’t have to “ submit to invasive biometric scans ” in gild to exercise that right . “ The government ’s insistence on hurl frontward with a large - scale deployment of this knock-down surveillance technology raise unfathomed secrecy concerns , ” Stanley say . “ These concern are compound by a want of congressional authorisation and sufficient safeguards , the government ’s retiring security failures , and unreciprocated interrogation about the technology ’s effectiveness , bias , and broader societal implication . ”

Among his concerns , Stanley referenced theU.S. Customs and Border Protections revealingthis summertime that photos of travelers as well as their license plates were compromised in a cyberattack targeting a Union subcontractor .

DHS did not answer to a Gizmodo asking for comment . The agency ’s director of insurance policy and planning Michael Hardintold CNNthe regulation is in its “ net stages of clearance ” and is awaiting a public comment period .

Stanley said lawmakers should intervene to stop the agency from implementing this case of surveillance technology .
