Seals are perish in Alaska , and no one roll in the hay why .
At least 60 seals — including bearded , phone , and spotted seals — have late washed up dead along Alaska ’s Bering and Chukchi sea coastline , agree to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA ) .
carcass of the seals , all protect under the Endangered Species Act , first began appearing in the water in May , but dozens of unexampled news report come in Monday from local anesthetic who saw the dead animals in southwestern Norton Sound on the western shores of the state . They ’ve been found hairless in some instances , but scientists are n’t sure if that ’s due to their bodies molder or moult , where animals shed feathering or hair to make way for raw I .

This is unsound news for the varying species ( obviously ) , but it ’s also worry for the Alaska Native people who bet on marine brute as a key root of food . Subsistence hunters are , after all , the ones out on the waters who often find these sad scenarios at first hand . NOAA is communicating with various local group to project out how to remediate the on-going issue . As it wrote in a release :
As ice seals are an all important resource for Alaska Native community of interests , food safety is a major concern . Some people have expressed concerns about contamination . Others have reported the seals are remarkably slight this year and are worried about prey availableness .
The agency is also working with the Alaska Marine Mammal Stranding Partners to take photographs of the dead animals and acquit proper postmortem examination to figure out what ’s shoot down them . These types of investigations , however , do n’t always offer a clear answer .

Asimilar mortality rate outcome — where the same seal species were found dead with patches of turn a loss hair — unfolded between 2011 and 2016 , and scientist still do n’t know exactly why . That event was believe to be the result of some type of disease , but tissue paper samples never pointed to any virus or pollutant to blame . At least 233 seals die during that event . Hopefully , NOAA figures out what ’s killing the seals to forbid such a mellow end toll this fourth dimension .
“ We are mobilizing to get our marine mammal experts and our partner there to get some sample , ” said Julie Speegle , a spokesperson for NOAA Fisheries , to Reuters . “ It could be a harmful algal prime . It could be a number of things . ”
clime change probably does n’t help . Winters have beenabnormally strong , and this already seems to be contributing to the death of other animalslike puffin . Record warmth in recent yearsdisruptinglife as we know it in the coastal Arctic .

seal bet on chicken feed to rest and hunt . However , Arctic ocean ice just hit a disc low for this time of the month , cover Mongabay . That may be playing a persona , particularly if seal are n’t finding enough ice , but researchers will have to take a closer face to be sure .
