Thomas Alva Edison was a great inventor . He imagined a future completely unlike from the present in which he lived , and had the whizz to make it happen . ( He was alsothe sub of an stillborn science fiction serial . ) It ’s no wonder that Henry Ford had what amounted to a crush on Edison , who encouraged Ford ( then the chief technologist at Detroit Edison ) inhis quest to make a “ gasoline automobile . ”Ford ’s admiration for his hero fall upon almost stalker - esque balance . Indeed , he owned what may be the ultimate Edison relic : his last breather . That ’s right , tucked away in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn , Michigan , is a sealed glass tube next to a paper wrap labeled “ Edison ’s Last Breath ? ”
Allegedly , Ford was concerned in the paranormal and may have believed Edison ’s soul would exit his eubstance along with his terminal expiration . Imagine the scene at its harvesting . It ’s October 18 , 1931 . The Wizard of Menlo Park is dying . His concerned and loving family is gather around the bed where the great valet de chambre lie , his beloved son near his father ’s head , a mental test tubing in his mitt :
“ Now ? ”

“ Yes … no , look , still breathing . ”
“ How about now ? ”
“ Breathing . ”

“ NO . Look , Charles , just stopper that blessed thing and severalize Ford you got it . ”
Ford ’s daughter find the “ last intimation , ” along with Edison ’s hat and shoes , at the folk dwelling house in 1950 . AsCecil Adams points out , whatever essence of Edison the test vacuum tube may have hold back has probably long since evaporated . Photo by Michael Zadoorian .
