Last night ’s Eureka was one of the funniest sequence in a while — Carter is forced to endure disappear banks , floating landrover , obnoxious geniuses , and , most terrifyingly , out - of - shape physicists . And somewhere , amid all the jinks , an malefic secret plan is brew .

For one tremendous , glorious moment , Carter thinks it ’s his lucky mean solar day – he gets to investigate a bank robbery ! Much to his displeasure , it turns out this is n’t a typical bank looting : the full camber has cryptically vanished . His investigation in the end reveal that the bank was n’t stolen . rather , it ’s levitating richly in the strain , thanks to a newly deposited Higgs field disruptor neutralize its bulk … and , if Carter does n’t cease it , the mass of everything in Eureka .
While Carter grows progressively aggravated with the town ’s super - science wackiness , the rest of the cast is officious prepping for the Astraeus mission to Titan , which this hebdomad means some harsh forcible training at the hand of Lupo . But it ’s Allison who has the most to carry on with – she ’s losing clock time and doing thing she has no memory of , all under the secret ascendance of Eureka ’s arch - bane Beverly Barlowe .
“ Up in the Air ” feels like a number of a reversion to the Eureka of former seasons . The episode ’s central plot of land is all about the townspeople being irresponsible with tops - science , much to Carter ’s consternation , which then forces him to save the day pretty much single - handed , very much to his dismay . That used to be a fairly standard template for episodes – indeed , the show plausibly go to that well a few too many times in years past – but it ’s a refreshing change of stride to see it come back every once in a while .
A big reason why it ’s so much playfulness to return to the previous convention is that Colin Ferguson is a master at comically pissed off acting . * Sheriff Carter is middling much always a bit confused and pissed with Eureka , but here Ferguson and writer Kira Snyder turn that frustration up to eleven , with every lineage reading and facial reflection sell Carter ’s climb up frustration with the pachydermatous geniuses who wo n’t stop ill-treat him – and that includes his easily distracted friends . Not since Nathan Stark was in town has Carter been quite so thoroughly maltreat by Eureka , and of form the gloriously dickish Dr. Parrish is behind it .
Indeed , it ’s Dr. Parrish who points out what makes the integral situation so ridiculously cruel to Carter : he does n’t even have anybody to blame . After all , Parrish may have had a dangerous Higgs disruptor on his hands , and another scientist may have been carry onto a ampule of his grandmother ’s antimatter , but both of them did the only responsible for thing and put their valuables in an osmium - reinforce cant . It ’s as though the very concept of Eureka is at geological fault here , and Carter is leave to rage against his role as cosmic punching bag … with some fairly hilarious event .
Nothing is more retro than a return appearance from Beverly Barlowe . I ’ve gone over my reservations with her character before – mainly the fact that I ’m still not completely sure what her motivations are or what magnanimous construction she gibe into – but I ’ll table that for now , as this episode makes good use of her . While there have to be more dignified way to remotely control someone , her handling of Allison actually reach a decent amount of sense , as weird mystery plot of land go , and the episode does a deft job portraying Allison ’s absent time .
I particularly liked the chronological sequence where we zapped through an entire conversation between Allison and Fargo , only to discover out that the Beverly - control Allison had maneuvered herself to become act oral sex of Global Dynamics . It ’s still too soon to judge the conspiracy as a whole — and I could probably niggle with all the system of logic of giving Allison quite so many chances to ferment out the truth and share her concerns with others — but overall , I imagine this is hanging together pretty well so far .
That aside , this is mostly a comedy - ponderous installment of Eureka , which is another reason why I find it so brisk . Erica Cerra gets to channel her inner R. Lee Ermey as the Mandrillus leucophaeus instructor ( minus the unremitting barrage of F - bombs , but that ’s what the DVD is for ! ) , while Zane stress to overcome his multiple felonies by enter in every training group .
What ’s great about this sequence – beyond the fact that it ’s , you know , rum – is that it process because these are characters we ’ve gotten to know over the course of multiple seasons . It ’s a confident show that can build up a character as a real hard - ass drill instructor and then break - gash to one of its regular . That ’s the kind of introduction that most shows would earmark for a self-aggrandising client star , and it ’s nice to see that , as far as Eureka concerned , Jo as a Mandrillus leucophaeus instructor is a more than big enough reveal .
in the end , there ’s the ongoing love triangle between Fargo , Holly , and Dr. Parrish . Maybe it ’s because this episode just generally reminds me of previous seasons , but their triangle feel like a distorted reflexion of the old Jack / Allison / Stark triangle – hell , even Wil Wheaton ’s face fungus looks the part . I ’m not certain whether any of this is intentional ( the face fungus , at least , is in all likelihood a coincidence ) , but it ’s a fun callback , particularly since this now intend Fargo is occupying the same position that Carter once did , which just feels all variety of awesome and wrong . Except , of course , Fargo has index that he can joyously abuse in his state of war with Parrish , which instantly sets him apart from the good sheriff .
As for the guest stars , Felicia Day go along to quietly strip back some more of the bed of Holly ’s flaky exterior to bring out the individual underneath – passably much all my initial trepidation about her character is go at this point , although I would like to see the show burrow a little deeper into who she really is . Wil Wheaton continues to be corking as Dr. Parrish , who is very much … well , I was going to say the guy rope you love to detest , but really I just straight - up sleep with the slimy love child . Parrish is a breathing spell of smart , noxious air for the show , and it ’s kinda nice that so far he ’s not been softened or made squeamish by interaction with the cast . The only affair I ’d like to see is just what Holly come across in Parrish – we get a number of a sentiency of it here and in the precede sequence , but it ’s still a picayune hard to hold on just what their relationship is .
“ Up in the melodic phrase ” is another strong sequence for time of year 4.5 , which has generally been a ranking looping of the show . ( Even “ Reprise ” , whichI was n’t crazy about ab initio , suffer a peck good after a rewatch , as I kind of wait it would . ) It ’s good to see Eureka kick back and keel off an hour of almost straight - up clowning every once in a while , and the episode also feel like a squeamish monitor of what has made the show fun in previous days . And now it ’s full speed ahead for next week ’s episode , which promise a big showdown between the force of immorality and the force of good … plus Dr. Parrish , presumably .
