The UK is alreadyfacing major gas shortages , and now French officials threatening to sever an understanding to issue electrical energy to the land . The reason ? Clément Beaune , France ’s EU amour minister , said in an interview with the Gallic wireless station Europe1 on Tuesday that the country could act inmere twenty-four hour period . “ The Channel Islands , the UK are dependent on us for their energy supply , ” Beaune say . “ They think they can survive on their own and badmouth Europe as well . And because it does n’t act , they gratify in one - upmanship , and in an aggressive way . ”
The two Channel Islands Beaune ’s referring to here — Jersey and Guernsey — are nest between Britain ’s and France ’s respective coastlines . The two island are reliant on energy ply by submarine cables coming from France that provide clean energy . Guernsey gets90 % of its electricityfrom renewables in Europe while Jerseypulls 95 % of its electricityfrom France .

Last week , a full thirdof the Gallic fishermen applying to angle around Jersey ’s waters got turn away by the island ’s government . The week before , UK officials only offered 12 applicant memory access to EU licenses afternearly 50 applied . When asked about the rejections , British officialssimply saidthat the rejected vessel failed to offer grounds that they ’d been licence to operate in these waters in the past , a precondition for experience a license .
Gallic Maritime Minister Annick Girardin promise it , grant to France24 , “ a fresh British refusal to use the conditions of the Brexit accordance ” while also noting that “ Gallic sportfishing must not be accommodate hostage by the British for political ends . ”
The French do have the UK over a bit of a gun barrel . electrical energy prices have been skyrocketing in the UK due to an overdependence on natural gas to mother power at home . Another undersea cable from France to the UK was alsoknocked out of commissionlast calendar month by a flak , further driving up price . That cable television is ask to come back online by the end of October . There ’ but the new altercation mean the French may not need to send any juice through it when that happens .
