A Good Samaritan is missing after helping to save a mother and 5-year-old daughter whose car crashed into a California river.
The woman was driving northbound on Airport Way on Tuesday when her GMC SUVveered off the road, “traveled down an embankment, struck a tree, and entered the water," according to a news release from California Highway Patrol’s Tracy Division.
After the 5-year-old was saved, one person jumped into the San Joaquin River to try to rescue the mother, who had gone underneath the water’s surface, CHP Tracy said.

The woman briefly lost consciousness but was revived when medical personnel arrived on scene, according to the fire department.
CHP Tracy said it is unclear if the individual drowned or “walked away from the scene.”
“Emergency crews are currently on scene using all available resources (dive team, boat team, drone, air support) to locate the witness,” the department said.

The driver sustained “major injuries” in the crash, according to CHP Tracy. Both she and her 5-year-old daughter were transported to San Joaquin General Hospital following the river rescue.
