Margot Robbie’sPirates of the Caribbeanfilm is reportedly dead in the water.

More than two years after PEOPLE learned that the actress, 32, wasset to star in a spinoff installmentof Disney’s popular adventure franchise, Robbie toldVanity Fairin its December 2022/January 2023 issue thatthe project is not in the works.

A rep for the Walt Disney Company did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

“Amsterdam” World Premiere

The Hollywood Reporterfirst shared the news thatRobbie would star in a newPiratesfilmback in June 2020. The project would’ve seen her reuniting with Christina Hodson, the screenwriter forBirds of Prey,who was also set to write thePiratesspinoff.

The franchise has accumulated over $4.5 billion for Disney beginning with 2003’sPirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Multiple sequels followed the blockbuster hit, such as 2006’sPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, 2007’sPirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, 2011’sPirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tidesand 2017’sPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

All the films starredJohnny Deppas the swashbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow, withOrlando Bloom,Keira Knightley,Geoffrey Rush,Javier BardemandPenélope Cruzcostarring in the franchise.

And fans of Depp, 59, might also have to wait a bit longer — or indefinitely — to see him don the kooky Captain Jack’s hat once more.

A rep for Depp told PEOPLE in June that areport claiming the actor is returningto thePirates of the Caribbeanfranchise for apayday of over $300 million is “false.”

The saga’s producerJerry Bruckheimertold U.K. outletThe Timesin an interview published the previous month (while Depp was in court forhis defamation trialagainst ex-wifeAmber Heard) that his team was working on “twoPiratesscripts — one with [Robbie], one without.”

As for Depp potentially being involved, Bruckheimer, 79,said, “Not at this point”— but “the future is yet to be decided.”
