It ’s been awhile since we ’ve heard from Afghanistan Sam , my buddy who ’s been living in Kabul for the past several year . Back in 2008 he guest - blogged abouthow to buy , slaughter and spittle - roast a sheep , and we saw a bit of his little film about a immature woman who was sweep in disceptation ( and death threats ) after come forward asAfghanistan ’s first female Olympian . So what ’s Sam been up to over the past few years ? Among other things , he ’s founded the Afghan Film Project , which has a authorization to further Afghanistan ’s movie diligence and train the next coevals of Afghan filmmakers . Part of how they ’re getting thing off the ground is by create a short picture show , written and direct by Sam , but crew largely by local family line , called “ Buzkashi Boys . ”

Buzkashi , for those of you who do n’t screw ( and I for certain did n’t ) , is the national sport of Afghanistan . It ’s a squad fun played on hogback , and it ’s a number like Polo , but instead of a ball they apply the brainless carcass of a goat . There was a great article in the Times of London recently about Sam ’s photographic film , which is now in mail - production . I love the range it opens with :

Finding subject child actors in a country where , until recently , make up and watching moving picture had been illegalize , was no easy task . “ It ’s been really severe , but I ’ve really enjoyed it , ” suppose Fawad Mohammedi , 12 , who toy the urchin . “ I ’ve learned how to act as sad by remember the death of my father . ”
