A dad of three and grandfather of two was killed in a Walmart parking lot after a minor fender bender.
Jonathan Mauk, 59, went to Walmart in San Bernardino, Calif., on the night of Feb. 5 to pick up supplies to make beef jerky, his son Matthew Mauk explained toThe Press-Enterprise. He was backing up after passing a parking spot when his custom-built 1998 Chevrolet Camaro Supersport collided with another vehicle backing up.San Bernardino Police Captain Nelson Carrington told PEOPLE that Jonathan got out to apologize to the other vehicle’s driver, 37-year-old Shawntece Marie Norton.

“There was a verbal altercation, and that’s when, per witness accounts, the suspect retrieved a firearm and shot the victim. It’s my understanding that the suspect is the one who did all of the yelling,” Carrington told PEOPLE, noting that police responded to the scene at around 8 p.m.
Jonathan died at the scene, and Norton was found at an apartment complex “less than 12 hours later” after having fled the area, according to Carrington.
According to court records, Norton pled not guilty to all charges and remains in custody. She has been appointed a public defender and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday for a pre-preliminary hearing.

“(Norton) took away a person way before he was ready to leave this planet. He had a lot of love left to give. I’m looking at my family. It’s completely broken,” Matthew toldThe Sacramento Bee.
Matthew remembered his father as “truly selfless” and told the outlet that he adored being a grandfather to his 10-year-old grandson and 5-year-old granddaughter.
“There is no sacrifice he wouldn’t make for his family,” Matthew told the outlet while recalling a letter his family found a few days after Jonathan’s death that he wrote a “couple of years back” after becoming sick.
“He outlined a message to every single one of us. In the letter, he wanted his granddaughter to know that he loved her more than anything in the world. There’s a hole in our hearts that can never be filled,” said Matthew.
